2017 Sessions and Field Trips

SESSIONS: 

JUNE 5 – 16  |  RECYCLE CAMP  | 2 WEEK SESSION

Reduce, reuse, repurpose and recycle! Young Artists will be given the opportunity to develop their artistic skills and engage with their peers while making original artwork with everyday objects. In theater new spins will be put on old tales. The dance and music classes will build on already acquired skills and turn them into new choreographed works and compositions.     Young Artists will also explore the concept of  sustainability as they turn waste into wonderful works of art.

June 9: Audubon Aquarium and Storyland at City Park

June 15: Performance, Nola Spaces, at 4:00pm

June 16: Audubon Park, Newman Bandstand (near Golf Clubhouse and Shelter 10) with a performance by our young artists at 11:00am and Audubon Zoo.


JUNE 19 – JUNE 30  |  CampNOLA  | 2 WEEK SESSION

Laissez les bon temps rouler! Young Artists will explore the culture, history, and art of their hometown. Upturn Arts teachers will share the lives of such musicians as as Dr. John, Fats Domino and Mahalia Jackson. Young Artists will create art inspired by the beauty they pass by everyday. Dancers will learn to second-line and strut their stuff and actors will play out some very traditional and uniquely New Orleans stories.

June 23: Presbytere Museum, Cabildo Museum, Jackson Square, and Cafe Du Monde

June 29: Performance, Nola Spaces, at 4:00pm

June 30: Prytania Theatre for a movie and The New Orleans Jazz Market with a performance by our young artists at 2:00pm!


JULY 5, 6, 7  |  RED, WHITE AND BLUE CAMP  | DAILY DROP-IN

Young Artists will spend this shortened week discovering what makes them feel free, independent, and proud while united at the same time. Each day will have a different color theme – Wednesday (red), Thursday (white) and Friday (blue).

No field trip or performance this week!


JULY 10 – JULY 21  |  INTERNATIONAL CAMP  | 2 WEEK SESSION

Around the world in ten days! Young Artists will discover world music from Folk to Indigenous melodies. They will learn about different types of theater such as: Kabuki , Commedia dell’arte and Noh theater styles. They will also explore ethnic dances from Africa to Spain. Additionally, they will learn styles of visual art inspired by cultures all around the globe. This will be a great place for children to learn and experience diversity through multicultural artistic experiences.

July 14: The US Mint, Dutch Alley, and The French Market for refreshments

July 20: Performance, Nola Spaces, at 4:00pm

July 21: New Orleans Museum of Art (with a performance by our young artists at 11:00am) and Sculpture Garden tour


JULY 24 – AUG 4  |  SUPERHERO CAMP  | 2 WEEK SESSION

It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s Upturn Arts Young Artists! This session is all about Super Powers: the powers we already have, the powers we wish we already had, and the powers we see in each other. Young Artist’s will draw inspiration from their favorite superiors, cartoons, and real-life experiences to create a Marvel-Esque performance that’s outta this world!

July 28: Heritage Park – Kenner Space Station / Science Center / Planetarium

August 3: Performance, Nola Spaces, at 4:00pm

August 4: Audubon Butterfly Garden and Insectarium with a performance by our young artists to be determined!


AUG  7 – AUG 11  |  CAMP EXPLORE  | ONE WEEK OR DAILY DROP-IN

Young Artists will use this week to explore their uniqueness and creative imaginations through dance, visual arts, theater, and music. Self-exploration as an artist will be encouraged.
